According to Japan's Kyodo News Agency, Japan and the economic ministers of ASEAN (ASEAN) held an online meeting on the 20th. In light of the rise of protectionism around the world due to the Trump administration's high tariff policies in the United States, the participants agreed to move forward with free trade. The meeting adopted a joint statement emphasizing the importance of strengthening trust and cooperation to address common issues. Participants also agreed to work together to support a rules-based trading system and strengthen cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automobiles amid heightened global economic uncertainty. The ASEAN side stressed that it will not take countermeasures against the U.S. tariffs and will engage in constructive dialogue with the U.S. side.
