I just checked the calendar and remembered that Carnival recently took place. The Carnival date for 2026 was February 16 and 17, Monday and Tuesday, so it was an extended four-day weekend if you include the Saturday and Sunday beforehand. Those two days are fixed public holidays by law, so anyone who worked on those days is entitled to double pay.
Honestly, Argentina has a strong tradition with this. Carnival dates back to the period before Lent, the 40 days leading up to Holy Week. The dates change each year because they depend on the Catholic liturgical calendar and lunar cycles. This year, people took the opportunity to go to Gualeguaychú, which is the epicenter of the celebrations here, or stayed in Buenos Aires watching parades in neighborhoods like Boedo and San Telmo.
Now that we're in April, the next major holiday is Holy Week, followed by the calendar of historical days. But well, the 2026 Carnival date is already in the past. Did anyone go celebrate or stay at home?
