Many people lose funds when transferring crypto because they don't know what a memo is and why it's needed. Let's clarify this in more detail.

Memo (also called Tag or Target ID) — is essentially a digital or alphanumeric code that is added to a transaction on certain blockchain networks. It sounds simple, but in practice, it can save your funds from being lost.

Why does it exist at all? Because some cryptocurrencies, like XRP, XLM, or BNB, allow multiple users to use the same wallet address on platforms. Without an additional identifier, the platform simply won't know who the coins are intended for. That's where the memo comes in — it unambiguously indicates which account the transaction belongs to.

When is it required? When you send cryptocurrency to centralized exchanges. For some assets, it's mandatory. For example, XRP requires a tag, XLM needs a memo, BNB on the BNB chain also uses a memo, and EOS treats the memo as the main recipient identifier.

Where to get the necessary memo? When you open the deposit form on the platform and select, say, depositing XRP, you'll see two fields: the deposit address and a unique tag or memo. Just copy both values. When withdrawing from your wallet, enter them into the corresponding fields.

Practical example: you decide to transfer XRP from one platform to another. Go to the target account, select deposit XRP. The platform provides you with an address like rEXAMPLEAddress123456 and a memo like 12345678. When sending from the first platform, copy both values into the required fields and send.

What happens if you forget the memo? This is a common mistake. The transaction will go through, but the platform won't be able to determine who it's for. Then you'll have to contact support and hope they can help recover the funds. This process is lengthy and not always successful.

Some wallets like Trust Wallet or hardware wallets also indicate whether a memo is needed when sending. Pay attention to this.

The bottom line: if you're sending XRP, XLM, BNB, or other assets that require a memo, don't skip checking if it's needed. It takes 10 seconds and can save you a lot of nerves and potentially money. On Gate or other platforms, it's simple and clear — just follow the instructions when depositing and withdrawing funds.
