I noticed that Netflix released a pretty interesting documentary in January 2024 called Bitconned. It's the story of one of the biggest crypto scams we've seen, that of Centra Tech. And honestly, it's a good reminder of why you need to stay vigilant in this industry.
So here’s the story: Ray Trapani was the mastermind behind it all. Along with his partners Sohrab Sharma and Robert Farkas, he launched Centra Tech in 2017, right when Bitcoin was exploding. Their plan was to offer a crypto debit card, but of course, that was just the facade. What really interested Ray Trapani and his accomplices was raising capital through an ICO. They managed to convince investors to put in $25 million into the project. Not a bad scam, right?
The thing is, the SEC quickly spotted false statements and material omissions in their pitch. Ray Trapani ultimately pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay back more than $2.6 million, not counting prison time. His partners also took a hit, especially Sohrab Sharma, who had to repay over $37 million.
The documentary was directed by Bryan Storkel, the same guy who produced The Legend of Cocaine Island. It does a good job showing how Ray Trapani basically saw crypto as just another opportunity to make money, legally or not. The film really highlights the character’s mentality and how it all ended.
What’s funny is that Centra Tech wasn’t an exception. We’ve seen similar cases continue after that. For example, SafeMoon also filed for bankruptcy recently after the SEC accused the team of violating securities laws. The U.S. Department of Justice even arrested some members for alleged fraud. And apparently, that’s why the U.S. government created a dedicated task force in 2023 to track crimes related to cryptocurrencies and darknet markets.
Overall, the Bitconned documentary is a good case study on the risks in the industry. Ray Trapani and Centra Tech are classic examples of how the lack of regulation at the time allowed some to do whatever they wanted. Things are moving a bit more now, but it’s still a good reminder to stay cautious.
