A U.S. judge rules that Visa must face a new class action lawsuit regarding debit card monopoly.
Golden Finance reports that U.S. District Judge Brodie in Brooklyn, New York, ruled that the $5.6 billion settlement agreement reached in 2019 regarding credit card transaction fees does not apply to the new allegations against Visa (V.N) for monopolizing the debit card market. Although there is overlap between the two sets of cases, the facts in the new case "are substantively different" from those in the earlier case. Brodie's ruling pertains to a lawsuit filed by merchants against Visa last October, which is similar to the case brought by the U.S. Department of Justice a month earlier in federal court in Manhattan. Brodie's ruling suggests that Visa may soon have to face antitrust lawsuits from both the federal government and private companies over the next few years.
