Maine will become the first U.S. state to ban data center construction statewide, with the ban lasting until November 2027

Gate News message: On April 9, according to CNBC, Maine is set to become the first U.S. state to ban data center construction statewide. This week, Maine lawmakers approved the text of a bill that would prohibit building data centers in the state until November 2027. The measure is expected to receive final approval in the coming days, and it will also establish a committee to propose a possible regulatory framework for data centers, to ensure they do not lead to energy prices rising or bring other problems to residents of Maine. Although the bill has bipartisan support, it has still drawn strong opposition from technology groups and businesses, who worry that even a temporary construction delay will cause the state to fall behind. Glenn Adams, business development director at Sargent Corporation, based in Maine, said that any pause in data center construction— even temporarily— would leave the state behind. The company is currently building data centers in Virginia and North Carolina.
