A new trend, which may become the next big theme following artificial intelligence (AI)

As the AI development race continues, a new competition is emerging. This is quantum computing. Quantum computing has the potential to bring about significant technological advancements by solving problems that have previously been impossible to address quickly and efficiently. Given this potential, it is not surprising that a variety of competitors, from major tech companies to emerging startups, are entering the field of quantum computing.

Large tech companies may be safer investment options, but even if they succeed in dominating the quantum computing market, their growth will likely have limits. On the other hand, quantum computing startups are attractive because if one of these companies succeeds in developing a game-changing technology, there is significant room for growth. One of the stocks the author is paying attention to in this field is IonQ [IONQ].

IonQ's differentiated technology offers an attractive investment opportunity

IonQ is a company specialized in quantum computing. If successful, it is expected to bring high returns to its shareholders, but if it fails, there is a possibility that the stock price will decline. This will be the primary important point when investing in stocks like the company’s. Therefore, investors need to be fully aware of the risks. To address this risk characteristic, it is advisable to allocate such stocks to only a very small part of the portfolio (up to 1%). By doing so, while benefiting from significant increases in stock prices, it can also reduce the potential impact if the stock price drops to zero.

The stock price of IonQ is considered to have significant upside potential. Currently, the company's market capitalization stands at $11 billion, but the market it is competing in could grow to $87 billion by 2035. If IonQ can capture a substantial share in a market expected to experience significant growth, it could lead to an increase in its stock price.

Two Competitive Advantages of IonQ

Can capture ions in an electromagnetic field at room temperature.

The reason the author is paying more attention to IonQ than other quantum computing companies is that the company takes a unique approach. While many companies use superconducting technology to cool particles to near absolute zero, IonQ employs an ion trap approach.

The ion trap approach, which captures and holds ions in an electromagnetic field, can be performed at room temperature, providing a significant cost advantage. Cooling particles down to absolute zero is very costly and could hinder the widespread adoption of quantum technology from a cost perspective. This competitive advantage of ion queues will make the company an attractive option.

The ion trap method may become a more accurate calculation technique.

Furthermore, the ion trap approach has another advantage. In the quantum computing industry, it is known that qubits can interact with each other to obtain more accurate solutions. The superconducting platform utilizes this property by arranging qubits in a lattice structure, but the ion trap method takes it a step further by allowing all qubits in the system to interact with each other. This advantage may enable the ion queue to achieve a precision exceeding 99.9% in the two-qubit gate accuracy, which is an indicator of the precision of quantum computation.

Precision is one of the crucial challenges of quantum computing, and at this point in time, it is not as accurate as conventional computing. Quantum computers improve their precision with each calculation they perform. Ultimately, it is believed that the information provided by these calculations will reach a commercially viable level.

This turning point is important, and many predictions suggest it will occur around 2030. That is not such a distant future. However, the ion trap method has unknown inherent flaws, and there is a possibility that ion queues may get stuck in the world of quantum investment.

Aeon Kyu may see its stock price rise with a major announcement in the future, and it might not return to the current levels. Additionally, if you are considering investing with the understanding that there are risks, it would be wise to keep the proportion of this stock in your portfolio modest.

IonQ's unique approach sets it apart from other quantum computing investment targets and will likely become one of the wise choices in future quantum computing stock selection.
