The Crypto Manifesto Hidden in Your Mac
I just discovered something wild – Apple's been secretly tucking Satoshi's Bitcoin whitepaper into every Mac since 2017. I'm not kidding! This isn't some conspiracy theory – it's actually there, hiding in plain sight.
Some guy named bernd178 first spotted this back in 2021 while poking around the Virtual Scanner II function buried in the Image Capture Utility. Nobody gave a damn at the time (typical corporate forum response: "I find it hard to believe anyone cares"). But blogger Andy Baio recently brought it back to life on his Waxy blog.
Want to see it yourself? Just paste this into your Terminal app:
open /System/Library/Image\ Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf
But why the hell would Apple include this? Is some Bitcoin maximalist working undercover at Apple? The file's innocently named "simpledoc.pdf" – just 184KB. Maybe some developer slipped it in as an act of digital rebellion?
There's a juicier angle too. That fraud Craig Wright has been trying to copyright the whitepaper and suing anyone hosting it. Maybe some Apple engineer was flipping him the digital bird – after all, even Wright isn't crazy enough to sue Apple. He already got his ass handed to him in UK court over this in February 2023, with Judge Mellor basically saying "nice try, but no."
I'm watching to see if this survives in MacOS 14. Will Apple quietly scrub it in the next update once this gets more attention? They didn't bother responding to media inquiries about it. Typical.
This hidden whitepaper sits in our Macs while BTC dances around $109K today – ironic that the manifesto for a decentralized future is embedded in the products of one of the world's most controlling tech giants.
