Kyle Roche's Crypto World Collapse: What Really Happened? 🔍

Kyle Roche went from crypto litigation superstar to industry outcast almost overnight in 2022. Secret videos destroyed his career. It's a tale of ambition gone wrong in crypto's wild landscape.

Buffalo Boy Makes Good 🚀

Kyle grew up sharing a bedroom with his disabled twin brother in Buffalo. Tough start. This pushed him hard.

After Purdue and a consulting gig, he landed at Northwestern for law school. That's when Bitcoin caught his eye back in 2013.

During lectures, he'd check crypto prices constantly. Made about $100k in profits. Paid his tuition with it. He wrote a paper on Bitcoin as freedom currency.

"Maybe I could actually do something with this," he thought.

Becoming Crypto's Legal Gunslinger 🤠

At Boies Schiller Flexner, Roche jumped on a Bitcoin case involving Ira Kleiman and Craig Wright—the guy claiming to be Bitcoin's creator. He was fascinated. Might solve crypto's biggest mystery!

By 2019, after winning big for another client, he got $7.5 million to start Roche Freedman with his colleague. The firm got famous fast. Aggressive. Sometimes scary.

They filed class actions against seven crypto companies in April 2020. Accused them of pumping token prices then dumping. Later, they went after British entrepreneur Dominic Williams, claiming billion-dollar fraud with his ICP token.

Roche wasn't just practicing law. He was making enemies. Lots of them.

The Fateful Ava Labs Deal 💰

Around 2019, Roche met Emin Gun Sirer in a Brooklyn co-working space. Cornell professor. Crypto developer. They clicked.

Roche agreed to legal work for Sirer's Ava Labs. Payment? Equity and AVAX tokens. Those tokens started under 3 cents each.

A year later? Over $100 per token. Roche got rich. Really rich.

This relationship would ruin him.

London Calling... With a Trap 🕸️

December 2021. Roche gets an email from "Villavicencio." Claims to be a VC interested in Roche's new platform, Ryval. Roche flies to London.

The meeting felt off from the start. Norwegian investor Christen Ager-Hanssen poked Roche's forehead. Weird power move.

Instead of walking away, Roche tried harder to impress them. For hours, they got him talking about Ava Labs while secretly recording.

That night at Jean-Georges restaurant, Villavicencio handed Roche a drink. Roche thinks it was drugged. His memory gets fuzzy after that.

On tape, drunk Roche boasts: "I made sure the SEC and CFTC had other companies to focus on. Litigation can be a tool to attack competition."

Asked if Ava Labs sued competitors, he slurred: "No, they let me do it as a class action lawsuit."

Not a good look.

The Crash 📉

August 26, 2022. At a wedding, Roche's phone buzzes. A link to Crypto Leaks. His stomach drops.

More than twenty secret videos. Him bragging. Saying his lawsuits targeted Ava's competitors. Claiming he deflected regulators.

He tried defending himself on Medium. Too late.

Companies he sued filed to disqualify his firm. By October, a federal judge kicked Roche Freedman off a case against Tether.

Roche resigned from his own firm. Career destroyed. He started ethics classes and therapy.

The Puppet Masters? 🕵️‍♂️

Ager-Hanssen denies setting him up: "Not an operation controlled by me at all, carried out by other people." Claims Villavicencio filmed without his knowledge.

Villavicencio? Gone. Vanished. Unreachable.

So who did it? Competitors annoyed by Roche's lawsuits? Ava Labs enemies? Something else entirely?

It's not entirely clear. Kind of surprising nobody knows for sure.

In crypto's high-stakes world, Roche learned that power attracts attention. Bad attention, sometimes. Flaunting connections makes you a target 🎯

For lawyers eyeing the crypto space, maybe the lesson is simple: stay quiet about who you know. The crypto West is still wild. Even sheriffs get ambushed.
