The map of the world's money: why Bitcoin still has room to grow

robot
Abstract generation in progress

A classic question among crypto critics is: “Where does the money come from for Bitcoin to keep rising?”

The answer lies in the global numbers. Let's look at the bigger picture:

How much money really exists in the world

Physical money (bills and coins): ~9 trillion USD

  • What we all associate with “real money”
  • Only 6% of the money in circulation

Money in the banking system: ~250 trillion USD

  • Personal and corporate deposits: ~100 trillion USD
  • Institutional funds and assets under management: ~150 trillion USD

Total “real” money: ~250 trillion USD

(Note: The total financial assets in the world exceed 1 quintillion USD, but those are market valuations, not money in circulation)

Who controls the wealth

The distribution is brutal:

  • U.S.: ~62 trillion USD (almost 25% of the global total)
  • China: ~16 trillion USD
  • Japan: ~6.5 trillion USD
  • Rest of the world: the balance

This concentration explains why the decisions of the Federal Reserve move global markets. It is not a coincidence.

The crypto perspective

With 250 trillion USD of real money in circulation, Bitcoin ( cap. ~1.3 trillion ) represents only 0.5% of the world's money. Even the entire crypto ( market cap ~2-3 trillion ) is less than 1% of global money.

The question then is not whether there is enough money. The question is: what part of global money will migrate to decentralized assets in the coming years?
