Walrus's token model design is quite interesting—over 60% of the supply is directly allocated to the community, which is considered a relatively aggressive approach among mainstream crypto projects.
Specifically, 10% is used for airdrops to cover early users, another 4% was distributed to participants in the Sui and Walrus ecosystems before the mainnet launch, and after launch, an additional 6% is gradually released. The most critical part is the 43% ecosystem reserve, which is not locked in a vault but used to support project teams and developers, with a linear unlock schedule extending to 2033. This design logic is very clear—either distribute tokens to individuals or use ecosystem development to absorb the large supply.
In terms of actual results, by mid-2025, this mechanism has attracted hundreds of thousands of users, and over 30 projects have received ecosystem funding. This shows that the community-driven approach can really take off with Walrus, unlike some projects that only pay lip service to "community" as a slogan. Of course, this also means the real test is whether these reserves can support the sustainable development of the ecosystem moving forward.
