At the time, the military explained that they were essentially converting unguided Soviet-era FAB gravity bombs into guided glider bombs. At the same time, the invaders used unguided glider bombs as early as January of this year.

Russian media bloggers claim that the occupiers in unspecified areas of Ukraine began to strike with unguided glider bombs FAB UMPB, as opposed to the use of unguided glider bombs with unified planning and correction modules.

According to analysts, the UMPB guided glider bombs have a guidance system that includes a jam-resistant GLONASS/GPS "Comet" signal receiver and folding wings similar to those of the Kh-101 missile.

What modification may appear in KABs

According to Russian bloggers, the invaders can launch guided UMPB floating bombs from aircraft and ground-based multiple rocket launcher systems Tornado-S and Smerch. Now they are launched without jet engines, but in the future the aggressor plans to add such a modification.

"Russian military bloggers claimed that guided glider bombs with a jet engine and a fuel tank would allow the Russian air force to drop guided glider bombs from a lower altitude "similar to air-to-surface cruise missiles and increase the maximum range to 80-90 kilometers", - the report says.

This will allow the Russian Air Force to increase the depth of strikes against the positions of the Armed Forces without the risk of detection or destruction of aircraft by the Defense Forces.

"Thus, experts assume, the Russian defense-industrial base is trying to mass-produce UMPB guided glider bombs. The Russian troops will probably try to start serial production of UMPB guided glider bombs and expand their use on the entire front line," ISW concludes.

KAB at the front - what experts say

Serhii Kuzan, head of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, noted that the Su-34 aircraft and guided aerial bombs are Russia's main advantage at the front, and the enemy will attack with them as long as they have the opportunity.
