U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned about tariffs going to the Supreme Court. As is known, the Appeals Court ruled that the Trump tariffs were contrarian to the law and should be declared invalid. The Trump administration had appealed to the Supreme Court, the final court of appeal.
"We must comply with the decision"
Bessent, speaking to NBC from the US media, stated that if the Supreme Court also issues a negative decision, they have no choice but to comply with the decision.
"If the tariffs are canceled, we will have to refund half of the revenue we have obtained, which would be a disaster for the Treasury. We must comply with the Supreme Court's decision."
"Chaos can be experienced"
The Supreme Court may wait until next summer to make a decision on the legality of Trump's tariffs. The Trump administration had requested the court to issue an "expedited ruling."
Bessent also stated regarding this issue, "Delaying the decision until the summer months of 2026 will mean that the customs duties amounting to 750 billion to 1 trillion dollars have already been collected. Discussing the reimbursement of these will also lead to chaos."
