On a recent episode of the Sourcery podcast, which features leading venture capitalists and founders shaping the next wave of technological innovation, Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski discussed how AI coding tools, such as Cursor, have enabled him to develop prototypes more quickly while reducing the workload for his technical teams.

Vibe coding is an AI-assisted software development approach where developers use natural language prompts to instruct large language models (LLMs) to generate code. This method allows individuals, including those without extensive programming experience, to create functional software by describing desired outcomes rather than writing detailed code themselves.

Sebastian Siemiatkowski, who has been engaged in vibe coding for two decades, noted that the process has evolved considerably. Previously, he would provide engineers with instructions in meetings and receive a prototype several weeks later. Now, by working directly with AI, he can generate a functional prototype within about 20 minutes, streamlining the workflow and freeing up time for his staff.

“Rather than disturbing my poor engineers and product people with what is half good ideas and half bad ideas, now I test it myself,” said Sebastian Siemiatkowski. “I come and say, ‘Look, I’ve actually made this work, this is how it works, what do you think, could we do it this way?'” he added.

Although some industry observers caution that overreliance on AI for coding may oversimplify the work, vibe coding is already influencing how major technology companies and venture capital firms assess the value of software engineering talent.

Vibe coding has transitioned from a supplementary skill to a core requirement, with job postings from companies such as Visa, Reddit, DoorDash, and numerous startups specifying the need for experience in vibe coding or proficiency with AI-powered code generation tools like Cursor and Bolt.

Last week, Klarna made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange, twenty years after the company was founded. On its first day of trading, the stock surged 30%, rising from its $40-per-share initial offering to $52 per share. In an uncommon step, Klarna announced that vested restricted stock units would be converted into tradable shares, allowing employees to sell them just days after the $15 billion IPO. These converted shares are exempt from the standard six-month post-IPO lockup period and may be traded immediately.
